Sandie

I got my idea for this hub after reading one of Charmgirl's hub's about her cats.

We always had a dog and always a Jack Russel. But when my father died the dog became to much for my mother so he went to a farm where he had a good life with freedom more than he dreamed possible.

To compensate for not having the dog as company, my two sisters came up with the idea of getting mother a cat. Nice idea, but getting a little ball of fluff from a farm was the wrong idea. The cute little thing came from a mother and father that where wild and had never been inside a house. They would also hunt for their own food and water. After all they where on the farm to keep the rats and mice and other small wild creatures that would eat the farmers produce he'd stored away.

We where over in England visiting when my sisters decided to get this little monster. They arrived with a little ball of fluff in Jim's stretched arms and wearing a pair of welders leather gloves and a set of milk teeth firmly anchored onto one of Jim's thumbs. I thought bloody hell how's a seventy year old woman going to manage that bundle of fire. It was like having your very own gremlin as a pet. The little thing was fighting all the time . As my wife is very good with cats and dog she crabbed the spooked little darling and stuck it under her jumper and immediately it settled down and went to sleep.

As time went by mother got used to him and Sandie let mother do her normal house work. Thing where ok just so long as mother didn't walk within striking distance of a leg full of little sharp nails. Sandie got older and was his own boss, came and went, when and whereever his fancy took him.

Mother lived out in the country with small narrow roads and one day Sandie had an accident with a car. The car wasn't to badly damaged but Sandie had to have a leg amputated. He was a tough old cat and i think he must have had a dozen lives with all his escapades that he had and survived. Once he disappeared for over three weeks and mother put a notice in the local village post office with not much hope of finding him. A short time latter she go a phone call saying that a lovely ginger cat had moved in with her family and it only had three legs. Mother said if you think it's a lovely cat then it can't be mine. Mother went to have a look and what do you think the little sod gave mother a slap with a paw full of big nails. Straight away mother said that's Sandie and then as mothers do started to tell him off for stopping out all this time and disturbing this lovely family.

As time went by mother got used to her terror bundle of joy and i really think she thought of him as her baby, even if he kept mother at a distance. The scratches where not deep and healed up quickly and i think that they where Sandie's little love taps.

Mother had a heart attack ad died. So as i was over there i started so see what was to happen to Sandie. My two sister couldn't take him so i went round the animal centers and cat homes. I had to get it sorted in two days as i had to be back in Germany at my place of work. All the places i tried where full and wouldn't be taking any cats at the moment. I couldn't take him as i lived on the fourth floor of an apartment block. With Sandie being an out door cat it just wouldn't have be fair on him. So with one of the hardest decisions of my life i took Sandie to the vet who put him to sleep. In the end and after a lot of tears we decided that it was for the best and that Sandie and mother where together again and i hope he doesn't scratch her to much.

Aw, Ghaelach - this made me cry!

I'm a sucker for cats, I've rescued them all my life and it's true what they say ... they leave paw prints on your heart.

Or in the case of Sandie ... claw marks!

Hi Rusti.

Thanks for the lovely comments. To my mom sandy was a great comfort and not needing to have to take the cat for it's daily numbers in her old age was a blessing, we had built a cat door for him. He was a grand cat and my mother was a grand Lady.

Take care Rusti.

LOL Ghaelach
