Song for IRELAND
74Sing me home Phyllis
This hub was inspired by a lovely lady called Phyllis Doyle after reading her wonderful hub “Sing me home Laddie”. I thank her very very much as that story of to lovers brought me back to thinking of my love for Ireland.
It may sound strange to some people but I feel that I have a love affair with Ireland from across the seas.
Ireland has a history that has everything from wars to famine from kelts to myths not to mention all the poets and writers and many other great people. But for me the one thing that people around the world can have and that is music.
One way I have of closing the gap between Ireland and where I now live is with the music from this wonderful island. The music from this land you might say has many faces. The sound can be haunting, melancholy, funny, and reflects the mood of these folk.
They love to sing about this wonderful land and it's people and this comes through in the words and music.
The penny whistle, Celtic bagpipes, Bodhran drum, and not to forget Ireland’s national symbol the Harp and many more instruments are used in making it's very own distinctive style of music.
Irish music came to the foreground of the music stage with groups like “The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem” - “Davie Arthur and the Furey's” - “The Dubliners” - “Daniel O'Donnell” - “Paddy Reilly” to name but a few.
I've mentioned only the male groups and singers because with their soft and hard ruff voices Irish folk songs come over with a touch of mystery in the songs.
Son's of great Legends
My first video is a mix of Gaelic and English. A group that are son's of Ireland in fact son's of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. The song is called “Ar Eireanne Ni Neosainn Ce hl” and is sung by “The High Kings”. A beautiful combination.
One of Irelands most loved son's
My Second choice is a song from a man that has a voice that is so soft and warm and goes by the name of “Daniel O'Donnell”. The song that he sings is what people the world over say, the green island or better said “Forty Shades of Green”.
The son's have sung, now come's the Legend
My Next choice is to show how the Irish can sing and laugh about themselves. A song sung by a group that helped to bring Irish folk music to the foreground on the world music stage.
The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem where a group who's music lives on today through their own children, the high kings. The song is called “Finnegan s Wake”. Have a laugh.
Probably Ireland's most popular and best known world wide singers of Irish music
Video number four is by what must be on of Ireland’s biggest folk groups in the world. The “Dubliners” where known the world over and I can remember seeing them in the 60's.
As Ireland had a lot of problems in her history there are quite a few protest songs.
This song is about a man who was sent away on a prison ship for stealing corn for his children. This song is sung at a lot of big events where the Irish are performing along with many other classics. A lot of people will know “The Fields of Athenry”
Damian McGinty of Celtic Thunder sing "Come by the Hills" and this is for Phyllis
The fifth Song is from a relatively new group that debuted in August 2007 and are a more modern than folk.
One of the group members with a beautiful voice is “Damian McGinty” and I’ve chosen a song that my friend Phyllis Doyle has in her hub called “Sing me home Laddie”.
The song title is “Come by the hills” enjoy the song.
The most famous of all Irish song "Danny Boy"
My last song that I have chosen is sung by another of those groups or you might say duo that made Irish music world famous is called “Foster and Allen” They where beloved in the USA with their songs that would remind all the Irish of their roots and what they had left behind.
The song I have chosen is one of the most famous melancholy song to be adopted by Ireland. It's a song about a young boy going away to war and listens to words of his father. The song has become a signature song and anthem for Irish the world over. The words where put to the tune “Londonderry Air”. The boys name was Daniel and the song is called “Danny Boy.
You don't have to be Irish to enjoy this beautiful Ballard.
These singers are my own personal favorites which for the most shows my ages. But as i said at the beginning the idea came from a wonderful Irish lady and her hub about to young lovers through to the end of their lives. A wonderfully written but sad story. Thanks Phyllis for helping me over my empty period.

Beautiful, very moving--such a delighful read!!!
My friend, you are so right. Ireland is rich in music of all kinds and cultures. But the one thing that it all has in common is passion from beautiful people and singers. The Irish people are so true and genuine that you can't help but be addicted to them. Generosity is born in their soul and never changes with age. Danny Boy, always makes me cry. I have heard it played at so many funerals recently. Such a shame as it is a truly beautiful song. What about Westlife with "You Raise Me Up." another one of my favourites too. Loved the jaunt down memory lane. x
Absolutely wonderful hub filled with wonderful music, an element that helps pull us through and lifts us up through our emotions and circumstances in all of our lives. Thank you.

Oh My Gosh!, Ghaelach, you have indeed captured my heart, Laddie. I sit here with tears rolling down my face as I see behind your words to the very love for Ireland you have and your very romantic soul. What beauty, what joy there is in love of land, and what better place to love than Ireland! I thank you kindly for your mention of me and my story of Laddie and Sammy, who are so dear to me. They are so real to me for they live in my heart. Bless you for your devotion and love for Ireland and for being my friend. We can help each other over the "empty periods" which will be filled with friendship and love of Ireland. Thank you, dear, for sharing such beauty of song and land.
Voted up and across but funny. Awesome songs. I love Irish music. I have always liked slow songs with the bagpipes and such. It has always been relaxing to the soul I must say. Awesome article. Now Daniel, I thought I had seen him before. He is now on "The Glee Project". I recall his Irish voice from the show. This was great. I still liked the first song the most cause I love that traditional music. A great share Ghaelach.
Hi Ghaelach, What's the craic'
What a truly great hub well written, brilliant content and terrific videos.
I remember Val Donacan and the Dubliners from when I was a kid. Finnegan's Wake ha, I have been to a wake and it's just as it's described in the video.
I haven't heard these songs for donkeys years.
Thanks for putting it out here.
It's always amazed me that 'English Literature's' giants are invariable Irish. Ha ha

If you've read any of my hubs you know I love Ireland. Its music tells so much about the land, its people and its history! I love its music and have a friend who sings around Derry and Carndanagh, Peter Donegan who calls himself "Me, Myself and I." He's written two of his own songs and is doing well. I also had the good fortune to see Celtic Thunder when they were in New York City = their show is astounding. Voted your hub up!
What a beautiful hub, there is something special about Ireland. I have a nephew lives there and friends who I have know for many years.
I love Daniel O'Donnell and Forty Shades of Green is one of my favourites. Have several CD's of Foster & Allen.
Thank you for sharing all of these with us and bringing those warm feelings.
Ghaelach,
I appreciate seeing this musical part of your soul. This is informative and entertaining, as I am not as familiar with this amazing music of Ireland. It was a nice break to listen to your wonderful song choices.
Voted UP & UABI, mar.
Maith an fear, Ghaelach. Well done, lovely hub on the old sod.
Ghaelach, I so enjoyed all of the music in this beautiful hub. Have always been a big fan of Irish music. A land I want to visit one day. I couldn't listen to Danny Boy, I started to but....someone dear to my heart used to sing this song. Although John McDermott is not Irish he does a lovely version of Danny Boy and heard him sing this last summer at a music festival I was at.
Ghaelach! a 96! You scored with this one.
The writing is as good as the music, irish music has always moved me... lily
Aha! Now, can you tell me if the autoharp is Celtic? And, what does Na leth De Moigal mean? You see, the most beautul trancendent music I've ever heard, has always been Celtic. Thank you ahead of time! lily

What a hub, very wonderful tribute to Ireland with those songs.
My closest encounter of Ireland was just looking at some Stena Lines passenger ships ferrying passengers from port of South Wales then to Northern Ireland. That was June, 2009 as our ship stayed for a week discharging cargo at the port of S.Wales.
Awesome! Just beautiful. I am Irish, and my mom was pure Irish, though she has passed on now, would of loved hearing this beautiful music. And it brought a tear to my eyes just thinking how she would of loved this music. Gonna bookmark this for sure! Voted up for this!!
Hi Ghaelach ...your hub is really interesting .Voted it up!!
Hope to read more about Ireland from you.
I really love that place and especially the castles which still stand intact up to this date.
And I feel your name Ghaelach is also derived from the Gaelic language !
I am known to some Gaelic words..and made a guess :)
I loved your music.Thank you.Kathryn
Beautiful selections Ghaelach, thanks for sharing this wonderful music. I love Irish music, just simply adore it. Had fun listening and watching the videos. You definitely left one of the best for last, "Danny Boy." That song is my husband's favorite (he used to be in the Army), he could play that song over and over (that's how the song grew on me) and would sing it to our son to put him back to sleep when our little boy was still an infant.
I discovered Christy Moore completely by accident after hearing him on a Sirius channel. I got his "Live at the Point" album and fell in love with "The Cliffs of Dooneen." I think it's the most beautiful Irish song I've ever heard. Thanks for this hub that introduces me to other songs.
