Colitis Ulcerosa

Clostridium difficile (c.diff)

Colitis is a digestive problem and can be acute or chronic. Depending on the form of this disease it can be treated with antibiotics and in severe cases which can be life threatening surgery must be performed.

When a horse has the same problem that is known as “Colic” and is not handled immediately can result in death within 24 hours.

This bacterium that lives in our intestines is there to keep a normal balance in our digestive systems. It's when this "Normal Balance" gets out of control that the problems start. Toxins are released which attack the lining of the intestines and the new strain is formed called “Clostridium difficile” or c.diff for short.

A person that is healthy has normal bacterium which we all need and is classified as good bacteria. This gets to work in our digestive systems breaking down the food we have just eaten to make the fuel we need to live.

But there is also the bad or harmful bacteria c.diff and this type can multiply in the bowels or intestines and is the offender called pseudo membranous Colitis this being an infection of the large intestine.

A person with diarrhea will have normal bouts that are watery and the need to go to the toilet about three times a day. But with medication one feels better in a few days. Then there is the more serious form which ranges from diarrhea (where one needs to go many times in the day) to a life threatening inflammation of the colon.

The people that are most at risk are those over 65 years of age. Older people in hospitals or in long term medical facilities. It can also occur after antibiotics which tend to upset the normal workings of the intestines.

Surveys in resent years shows that “Clostridium difficile Colitis" is becoming more frequent and harder to handle. Alone in the USA tens of thousands of people contract this bacterium form each year. It is said to be getting more serious as young people not taking antibiotics and not hospitalized have started to contract c.diff.

This bacteria can be found everywhere throughout the environment, in water, in the earth (soil), and in the air. It is also found in human and animal faeces.

Clostridium difficile can be passed on from faeces by people not washing their hands properly after a visit to the toilet. Toilets are not the only place where this bacterium hangs out. It can be found in public phone booths, door knobs, hand rails, buses, trams, trains in fact any place where there are masses of people. Think about the market place and all those people handling the fruit and veg to see it it is ripe enough. You can bet there are a lot of people that bite straight into an apple without washing it. How many people don't wash their hand after they've been shopping??

Symptoms.

Watery diarrhoea three or more times a day over a period of two or more days, with mild abdominal, cramping, and tenderness in the lower part of the torso.

In more severe cases of diarrhea, C.diff is formed and can cause colitis. Signs and symptoms include watery diarrhea 10 – 15 times a day, cramping and severe pain, fever, blood or pus in the stool gang, nausea, dehydration, eating problems or weight loss.

Treatment

Mild cases can be treated with Antibiotics.

More severe cases where the immune system has been effected need immune modulators or may even need to be hospitalized and even a life saving operation.

Colitis is not a thing to play about with and must be taken seriously. Anything to do with Gastrointestinal should involve your family doctor or better still a specialist in these matters.

One easy way to help contol this bacterial problem is Cleanliness. "WASH YOUR HANDS"

Morning Ruth.

Thanks for stopping off to read.

Illness isn't something that we talk about openly. We don't know enough about a paticular topic and don't like to show our ignorance.

Because I have a problem (MRSA) I know alot about it and it isn't a problem to talk about it. The big problem is convincing people that you are ill. By that I mean when someone see's you smartly dressed, clean shaven, hair combed neatly, shoes polished they tend not to believe that you are so ill. If you have a leg in plaster, OK you've broken your leg. If you are in a wheel chair you must be very ill, but if you say you have "Chronic Osteomyelitis" first they can't even pronounce the words and second they've no idea what it is for an illness.

Ruth I could write a book about the things they say about me and my illness.

Take care Ruth and have a nice warm weekend.

Excellent article and nicely presented. If more people took just 2 minutes to wash their hands, we could stop the spread of so many diseases. It is the number one cause of infections. You have written a great hub which I am sure will be of benefit to your readers. Looking forward to a nice afternoon reading your hubs. :-)

Hi again Anne.

I've taken your advice and spirited this person into cyber space. I have also been in touch with HQ.

So glad you popped over and found my hub interesting. I don't profess to know all about these little B's but what I do know is that a lot of problems could be eliminated if people where educated on the lines of hygiene. In first place on the things to do hygiene list is "WASH YOUR HANDS" and not only after using the toilet.

How many women in the street stop to talk to a friend and hear something sad and say OMG with their hand over their mouths. Great, millions of the little B's have just dived into their mouths. It's so easy done.

I won't go on and on, so take care Anne.

Morning Acaetnna.

You make me sound like the teacher when really I'm just an elderly student passing on this info.

When I read your poems it's not just the words that you write but in between each line I feel the love you send out.

Take care Acaetnna and keep rapped up nice and warm.

Hi Ghaelach,

Such an important hub and so sad that even in this day and age so many will not go to the doctors right on the onset of complaint but hoping I suppose that it will just 'go away'but sadly it just gets worse and so much time wasted.

Great work here and have a wonderful day.

Very important hub!

Much more emphasis should be given on hand hygiene, becuase if you analyse that is the root of many of these diseases getting spread.

Voting up and sharing socially:)

Morning Thumbi.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving your comments.

Glad you take my point on hand hygiene and as you say it's the #1 factor in the spreading of germs.

Our hands come in contact with so many things that other people have or will touch.

Take care Thumbi.

Many don't think about their HANDS. I see people in public restrooms just going to the bathroom and leaving! Or "pretending" to wash their hands, by putting the water on and off real quick. then not even taking paper towel to "pretend" to dry them. If they don't wash them then, then when do they? Then when they are in the same room with someone who is sick they shudder. Many of us don't realize how careful we have to be with germs on our hands. Yes, a touching a public door know, which we do all the time. I try and put my sleeve over my hands, byt I'm not usually conscious of it.b Good, informative hub!

Morning Jacy.

Super name.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your great comments.

Cleanliness is something that alot of people take for granted. There are good bacteria and there are bad bacteria, it's just that to many people are playing around with their health which can be life threatening.

Take care and have a nice weekend.
